Plot of SAS Rogue Heroes Series 1

SAS Rogue Heroes is a true-story historical drama. The show is based on the book of the same title written by Ben Macintyre.

The series gives an account of how SAS was formed in the dark era of World War II. Centered around a young officer who was injured during a training session in Cairo, David Stirling, who was the true founder of SAS, the series depicts how the SAS was formed. He was certain that the conventional units don’t work enough and fought to create a unit that is “toughest, boldest and brightest soldiers for a small undercover unit that will create mayhem behind enemy lines”.

SAS Rogue Heroes: Jack O’Connell talks about ‘daily vocal sessions’ to perfect his accent

After portraying combat hero Paddy Mayne in Steven Knight’s new drama SAS Rogue Heroes, viewers have named Jack O’Connell “one of the best performers” of our generation.

In a recent interview, O’Connell discussed his preparation for the role. Because he is from Alvaston in Derbyshire, he had to learn Mayne’s Belfast accent for the show and sought the assistance of a dialect coach.

“It was a no brainer working with him. And then I think another factor was also precisely where in Northern Ireland is he from? And the fact that he’s quite a learned man, Paddy Mayne – he practiced law at one stage.”

Fans have praised O’Connell for bringing the role to life with many demanding for him to win a BAFTA Award or perhaps be considered for the next James Bond.

Critics reviews of SAS Rogue Heroes Series 1

The Spectator calls it “refreshingly macho”.

The Guardian’s Graeme Virtue describes it as “a hardnut gang of non-conformists delivering cynical but poetic monologues, lavish period production design and lots of anachronistic soundtrack drops”.

Rebecca Nicholson, a columnist for the Observer, called SAS Rogue Heroes a “big and brash adventure drama” that is “witty, pacy, confident, and, as you might expect, occasionally very violent”.

However, Dan Einav of the Financial Times did not seem as enthused as other critics, calling the series “yet another ultra-stylised, slightly laddish but diverting story about a group of mercurial young men who play by their own rules”.

SAS Rogue Heroes divide fans over swearing and loud music

After the first episode aired, SAS Rogue Heroes fans were divided into two opinion: those who felt the concept was excellent and others who despised the profanity and loud music.

Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight adapted the narrative about how the SAS was formed and the troops who participated in its initial secret missions.

“To create a drama from this amazing story I had to sculpt a world where things are a little bit heightened, much like how war and the absurdity of it heightens every emotion. Bringing characters to life to inhabit this world, especially ones that are not archetypical heroes, was made so much easier by leaning on the facts and the truths.”

However, many people complained about the offensive language and loud music.

Someone even stated that they will not be watching the show again.

However, many viewers adored it and believed it had been misinterpreted.
