Passing The Baton: Meet Marvel’s Replacement for The Avengers

The Eternals is proving to be Marvel’s way of making it clear to their audiences that The Avengers phase is well and truly in the past. Over the last 13 years, all of Marvel’s movies have played a sort of a chronological role in establishing the primary antagonist, Thanos, as the main threat to our favorite heroes.

The Eternals seem to be following a similar path as establishing new heroes but emphasizing the “supernatural” aspect of the new heroes. The lack of a better way of explaining it is a sort of “passing the baton” moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The latest trailer for The Eternals provides the most solid evidence yet that Marvel intends to be brave and daring in reimagining the new heroes and giving them a distinct identity from The Avengers.

For a brief background, The Eternals are an immortal race of aliens living on this planet for more than 7,000 years. They’ve helped us, guided us, and even protected us. However, they did so without being an overt influence, choosing to stick to the shadows.

However, the events of Avengers: Endgame force them to abandon their years of secrecy and come out into the open and play a more direct part in protecting this world.

The latest trailer also gives us the best insight yet into how Angelina Jolie, Kit Harrington, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Gemma Chan, and Richard Madden will look like their respective characters on the big screen, not much different than how the Guardians of the Galaxy were introduced back in 2014.

Marvel has pulled no punches and ensured that while the characters themselves might not be household names, the actors and actresses playing them are. This would help tremendously in how Marvel generates interest and reverence for their new characters in a formula that has paid extraordinary dividends over the years.

Eternals opens in theatres after two other Marvel movies, i.e., Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings release. So, expect a Christmas opening for Marvel’s next ambitious project.
