Eight years after Marvel released his fake Mandarin twist on Iron Man 3, the studio finally unveiled the real Mandarin in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Trevor Slattery was hired to pretend to be the leader of Ten Rings, the same organization that kidnapped Tony Stark in the first Iron Man film back in 2008. Shang-Chi has confirmed that Wenwu was a true leader of the organization, as well as a scene that was removed from the Blu-ray film release provided a direct connection between the character and the men who kidnapped Tony.
The deleted scene mentioned, which is not one of the features found on Disney +, is called “Do It Yourself” and took place shortly after the death of Ying Li, Wenwu’s wife. After the murder of Ying Li, Wenwu returns to the Ten Rings and resumes control of his criminal empire around the world, which he had abandoned when he started a family. In the scene, Wenwu returns to his mansion, talks with the captured Iron Gang leader, and discusses his recent trip. He explained that he had been in Afghanistan to meet Raza, the leader of the Ten Rings and that he was happy with the progress they were making in undermining the nation’s stability.

If you remember, Raza is the leader of the Ten Rings from Iron Man, who was in charge of a mission that saw Tony Stark captured by a terrorist organization. Wenwu does not disclose in this new episode whether he was responsible for the attack on Tony’s convoy, but he oversaw the activity of that Ten Rings cell. This links Wenwu almost directly to the events of the original Iron Man movie.
The whole thing comes into full swing when you consider the future of Shang-Chi at MCU. At the end of the film, Shang-Chi is meeting with notable Avengers like Wong, Carol Danvers, and Bruce Banner. He will be a big part of their plans in the future, actually being the Avenger himself. Wenwu, his father, led the organization that captured Tony Stark to destabilize Afghanistan and become a world power. By doing so, he unknowingly helped create the Iron Man, who eventually led the Avengers to emerge.
