Christopher Nolan’s epic biographical thriller, “Oppenheimer,” continues to make waves at the box office, securing a major record for the acclaimed director nearly nine months after its debut.

Following its release in Japan on Mar. 29, “Oppenheimer” witnessed a surge in success overseas, grossing $1.6 million in its second weekend in local theaters and accumulating a total of $5.5 million since its premiere in the Asian nation.

With overseas ticket sales reaching $640 million since its July debut, “Oppenheimer” now holds the title of Nolan’s highest-grossing movie outside North America, surpassing the record set by “The Dark Knight.”

Oppenheimer” has exceeded all expectations, emerging as one of 2023’s standout performers both critically and commercially. Chronicling the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, portrayed by Cillian Murphy, and his pivotal role in the creation of the atomic bomb, the film has become the highest-grossing biopic and the second-highest-earning R-rated film of all time, raking in a whopping $970.1 million worldwide to date.

Praised for its emotional depth, historical accuracy, and stellar performances, “Oppenheimer” dominated the award season, clinching seven Academy Awards, including Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. Additionally, the film secured five Golden Globes, seven BAFTAs, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Featuring a star-studded cast including Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, David Dastmalchian, and Matt Damon, “Oppenheimer” marked Nolan’s first movie not distributed by the filmmaker himself since 2000’s “Memento.” Alongside “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer” played a pivotal role in revitalizing Hollywood’s post-pandemic business output, contributing to the domestic film industry’s highest summer revenue since 2019.

While Nolan hinted that his next project would depart from the bleak tone of “Oppenheimer,” speculations about his involvement in the James Bond franchise have surfaced. Despite downplaying these rumors, Nolan’s cinematic prowess continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Oppenheimer” is now available on various streaming platforms, including Peacock, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV, as well as home video.
