Johnny Depp has been having a blast creating a charmingly wacky character for a new massive multiplayer online role-playing game called Sea Of Dawn.
The story of Sea of Dawn takes place during the post-medieval period of European discovery. Players can travel the seven seas as either warships or pirates. It comes from Changyou, the Chinese firm behind the popular free-to-play MMORPG Dragon Oath, which has 300 million members since its inception in 2007.
Depp plays Phillip, a fez-wearing former explorer with an Irish accent, has now become blind and primarily restricted to his house, which is cluttered with mementos from his travels.
The premise of the video is that a bill collector has gone knocking, and rather than closing the door, Phillip welcomes him in and plays shocked. By caressing his visitor’s face, giving him a tour of the treasures scattered around the room, asking him abruptly, “Do you happen to play the flute, boy?” and then unintentionally burning his own beard on fire, he overpowers and misleads him. It’s a typical Depp portrayal.
In a short film developed, Depp describes his role of Phillip, “If there’s an opportunity for humor I’m going to grab it. That’s one of the things I want to see. I want to watch a character who has the proper hood spell to do things that I would never do.”
By the end, Depp’s Phillip has captivated his visitor and instilled in him a desire for his own sailing experiences, which is what the game is all about.
