Sony’s latest installment, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, is poised to make a monumental splash at the box office, aiming for an opening weekend around $45 million domestically.

This eagerly anticipated sequel follows the success of its predecessor, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, released amidst the pandemic in 2021, which grossed $129 million domestically.

With four films already under its belt, the Ghostbusters franchise has amassed an impressive $945.2 million globally. The imminent release of Frozen Empire is expected to propel the franchise past the coveted $1 billion mark, solidifying its status as a box office powerhouse.

Frozen Empire is set to hit 4,300 theaters, with previews kicking off Thursday afternoon in over 3,600 locations. Overseas, the film will debut in 25 markets, including the UK, Mexico, and Australia.

Unlike its 2016 predecessor, which failed to resonate with fans despite a solid box office performance, Afterlife was praised for its nostalgic charm and earned an A- CinemaScore. The presence of original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson added to its appeal, earning it accolades as a worthy successor to the beloved franchise.

While Ghostbusters typically attracts an older male audience, Sony is also targeting families with teens and older kids, aiming to broaden its demographic appeal.

In addition to the Ghostbusters frenzy, horror fans can look forward to Sydney Sweeney’s chilling performance in Immaculate, a scary nun movie premiering alongside Frozen Empire. Despite its lower profile, Immaculate has garnered positive reviews, promising a bone-chilling experience for moviegoers.

As anticipation reaches a fever pitch, all eyes are on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire to deliver another blockbuster hit and propel the franchise into cinematic history.
