The fate of George RR Martin’s unfinished novels, “The Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring,” has long been a topic of speculation.

The 75-year-old author, who has already published five volumes of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, addressed this concern over a decade ago, revealing potential plans for the books in the event of his demise.

In a 2022 Vanity Fair interview, Martin expressed discomfort with fans speculating about the destiny of his upcoming works in the tragic scenario of his passing before completion. He humorously remarked, “It’ll be done when it’s done. Hopefully, Covid won’t kill me so that we won’t have that issue.”

The uncertainty surrounding the fate of these eagerly awaited novels raises questions about potential successors. In 2013, Martin, along with his wife, asserted that they wouldn’t want another author to conclude the A Song of Ice and Fire series if he were to pass away.

However, Martin hinted that, faced with the knowledge of limited time, he might consider leaving detailed notes for someone else to carry on his work.

While Martin has invested over a decade in “The Winds of Winter,” with reports of more than 1,000 manuscript pages written, the official designation of a successor remains ambiguous. The mystery deepens with the final novel, “A Dream of Spring,” as the extent of its completion remains undisclosed.

If Martin were to depart with only a fraction of the last book finished, the likelihood of a posthumous publication diminishes.

As fans eagerly await the conclusion of Martin’s epic saga, the unresolved question of succession adds an extra layer of complexity to the legacy of “The Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring.”
