Garfield, the upcoming animated movie by Alcon Entertainment, will be released in theatres on Friday, February 16, 2024.
While we know that Guardians of the Galaxy actor Chris Pratt will voice Garfield and that the film will be released in about 18 months, the project is currently in pre-production. This also implies that the intricate parts of the film’s storyline are still being kept under wraps.
The adaptation was initially revealed in 2016 when Alcon Entertainment purchased the movie’s rights from the creator Jim Davis, who would also act as an executive producer. This will be the third cinematic feature starring the lazy cat since his 1978 debut, and the first film based on the Garfield franchise to be released in theatres since 2006’s Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, a sequel to 2004’s Garfield: The Movie, both films starring Bill Murray as the eponymous cat.
Samuel L. Jackson joins Pratt in the presently confirmed cast as a brand-new character Vic, who is Garfield’s father, with additional casting to be revealed in the near future.
Mark Dindal will helm the project, while David Reynolds will develop the screenplay. The movie will be animated by DNEG Animation. The film will be produced by DNEG CEO Namit Malhotra and DNEG President Tom Jacomb, as well as John Cohen, Steven P. Wegner, Andrew Kosove, and Broderick Johnson. Bridget McMeel and Craig Sost both serve as executive producers on the project.
The animated film is being funded by Alcon Entertainment, and Sony Pictures will distribute it worldwide.
