Ethan Hawke recalls losing ‘Moulin Rogue!’ role to Ewan McGregor

Ethan Hawke recollects losing the main part in Moulin Rouge! to Ewan McGregor, but he holds no grudge towards him.

The romantic musical, which was released in 2001, follows a young English poet, portrayed by McGregor, who falls in love with the star of the namesake cabaret, played by Nicole Kidman. Moulin Rouge! is directed by the director of this year’s Elvis biopic, Baz Luhrmann.

Moulin Rogue!

The Moon Knight star discusses the day McGregor beat him out for the main role in Moulin Rouge! in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant. Despite providing one of the finest screen tests of his life, Hawke was unable to knock off McGregor for the role.

“Ewan doesn’t like this because he gets embarrassed, but I gave one of the greatest screen tests of my life for Moulin Rouge. I did not get the part. I crushed this audition. And it just goes to show you how much I like Ewan’s work. I still went to see the movie on opening day and loved it. So, I got over it. But I will say, someday that audition will be seen and people are gonna rethink.”

Raymond and Ray

Hawke and McGregor have now teamed together for the upcoming Apple film Raymond and Ray. The film follows the duo as two estranged half-brothers who meet during their father’s burial, with whom both had a complicated relationship.

It is written and directed by Rodrigo Garca. The cast also features Maribel Verd, Sophie Okonedo, Maxim Swinton, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Chris Silcox, and Chris Grabher.

Raymond and Ray had its international debut at the Toronto International Film Festival 2022 and will be available on Apple TV+ on October 21.
