Deadpool 3 has been formally revealed as a project in production at the Burbank-based studio. The Molyneaux sisters (Wendy and Lizzie) of Bob’s Burgers fame were working on the script at the time. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the franchise’s former writing team, had been replaced by the duo.
However, the fate had some other ideas, Marvel Studios recruited Shawn Levy to helm the new part, which meant Reese and Wernick would return to write the script.
In a recent interview in promotion of Netflix’s Spiderhead, the duo have finally broken their silence on their first replacement. Reese said,
Yeah, that did happen. And look it just came down the way it did, but we’re thrilled to be back is the bottom line. We just couldn’t be happier where we are right now in the mad scientist lab creating fun stuff and hopefully, we’ll get a movie out to you guys soon.
In the same interview, the two stated Marvel Studios executives aren’t being forced to “Disney-ify” the screenplay for the forthcoming film, stating that it will be another R-rated blockbuster in the franchise.
Oh, absolutely. They’re not gonna mess with the tone. I mean, I’d never say never, I guess there’s an outside chance, but we’ve always been told it can be R-[rated], and we’re proceeding as if it’s R. We would like it to be R, we always have, so I don’t think that’ll change.
Very less is known about the project other than the collaboration of the writers, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy. Reese also revealed in the discussion that the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the prior Marvel world created by 20th Century Fox will be formally merged.
The release date for Deadpool 3 has yet to be determined.
