Netflix’s new high school drama Heartstopper has finally arrived, and it’s safe to say that it has won our hearts. A friendship-turned-romance between young Charlie and Nick has been teased for months, but key specifics about the series have been kept under wraps. Until now, that is. When Olivia Colman arrived on-screen to portray the part, it all came as nothing more than a surprise!

Colman is an iconic actress who won an Oscar for her performance in The Favourite and a Primetime Emmy for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, among many other roles including Fleabag, The Night Manager, and The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, but she was barely mentioned in Heartstopper.

Oseman and producer Patrick Walters had explored the possibility of Colman playing Nick’s mother, but they dismissed it as a silly idea at that point. In an interview with Metro, Oseman made a statement.

I thought there was no way she would want to be part of this or anyone famous would want to be part of this. I was proven wrong!

Kit Connor, who is co-starring with Olivia Colman in Heartstopper and is her teen son, said in a issue of JÓN.

It was honestly insane. We spent two days filming with her and it was an honor to be able to work with someone of her calibre. She is utterly just so talented and just makes it seems so effortless. A lot of my really important scenes as a character are alongside her, so I felt like it was something I really wanted to get right. The last scene I have with her is one of the ones I sort of circled thinking ‘I need to get that right’ It’s something I didn’t take lightly, being able to work with her.

The entire first season of this endearing coming-of-age romance is now available on Netflix.
