Crème de la Crème: The Best Netflix Originals To Watch In 2021

No other streaming service can match Netflix when it comes to the wealth of choice its subscribers have. Each genre is filled with classics as well as original shows and movies. Sometimes, that can be the problem: choosing what to watch. Although a nice problem to have, it always helps to have a solution at hand. That’s where we, the PureVengers, have come in to save the day after our team has collectively watched thousands (maybe tens of thousands) of hours of video. So, here are the best Netflix originals you can start streaming now:

Mindhunter

Put David Fincher and serial killers together. That’s all that should be needed to justify why Mindhunter is one of the best shows on Netflix. The man behind Se7en, Zodiac, and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is back with another take on serial killers, only this time, they’re all real. Mindhunter is vintage-Fincher, and his trademark style of creating a visual portrait of characters. We get to see two FBI agents interrogate and gain firsthand insights from some of the most notorious killers in American history. Unlike past versions, there are no over-the-top dialogues or attempts to stray from reality. Mindhunter is essentially a docu-series about what drives these troubled minds to commit their crimes as they do. Fincher asks the critical question, if you spend so much time in the abyss, do you really bring something back?

Narcos

Narcos was uncharted territory for Netflix. It was one of its first series that gained international acclaim thanks to a combination of stellar performances, a compelling story, and most critically, a plethora of iconic dialogues. We’ve all heard about Pablo Escobar thanks to the endless barrage of films and shows. However, Narcos mentioning how he amassed billions in wealth thanks to his cocaine empire. However, no show really captured how a grave-robber from Medellin became the most notorious crime boss in history.

The show’s nonlinear storytelling gives us a crucial insight into how Pablo climbed that ladder while also reflecting on how the men who eventually brought him down reacted to all his moves. It’s a fine show depicting the cat-and-mouse relationship that developed between Escobar and the law enforcement agencies, with both aiming to remain one step ahead of the other.

The Crown

Extravagant costumes, expensive sets, impeccable dialogues, and a look at the longest-reigning monarch alive: that’s The Crown in a nutshell. The Crown is essentially a biopic about Queen Elizabeth II, but it would be a crime to leave it at just that. It features riveting performances from some of Britain’s finest thespians playing characters that have created modern British history, such as Lord Mountbatten, Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill, and Princess Diana, among many others. Rather than follow a straightforward plot, the show allows the users to see how different eras’ geopolitical shifts affected the monarchy. It never feels too rushed or too slow. It gives the viewer the perfect experience of escapism by depicting the royal family as best as possible.

Daredevil

It’s hard to overstate what a gigantic risk Daredevil was. Marvel has carved out the most successful movie franchises in its Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The MCU has elements of comedy and lighthearted humor with a fair bit of thrill. With Daredevil, the MCU went in a different direction, pursuing an R-rated take on the more gruesome side of crime-fighting.

The fight sequences made everything else depicted before in the MCU like child’s play, while the show’s grittier moments showed us the repercussions of messing with the criminals. It played a pivotal role in Marvel green-lighting other similar R-rated shows like Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, The Punisher, and The Defenders.

Bojack Horseman

How good can a cartoon about a depressed human-esque talking horse be? The answer is really really good. In its six-year run on Netflix, it has become the platform’s best achievement in terms of relatability. You’d expect a show that deals with something as serious as depression and mental health to be walking on eggshells, but Bojack Horseman is as brash as it can be. With constant visual gags, dark comedy, a litany of complex characters, intricate dialogue, and the ability to make you think, few other shows can make you think or rethink your life as Bojack Horseman.

HOW TO: Access Netflix Internationally

Despite ruthless competition in the past couple of years, Netflix remains the top dog within the streaming world. While it has lost some classics to rival platforms, it has more than made up for them with its slew of original productions from around the world. Hence, it’s no surprise that viewers from around the globe want unrestricted access to the service.
