Based loosely on real events, Argo tells the story of the “Canadian Caper” in which U.S. Central Intelligence Agency operative Tony Mendez worked with the Canadian government to rescue six American diplomats trapped in Tehran during the 1979 revolution. The caper involved Mendez and a colleague taking Canadian passports to the diplomats. The passports were real, but the identities were fake. The visas in them were forged. These passports and visas were then used as part of a plan to convince Iranian border control that the party was actually a location-scouting crew working on a film called Argo. The film tracks the progress of the escape from its elaborate set-up (which paid off massively later on) to its eventual success.
