The per-episode production cost of the Game of Thrones series started at approximately $6 million (season 1) and went up to $15 million (season 8). But with even more computer graphics generated dragons, the 10-episode House of the Dragon has costed just under $20 million per episode.
Set 200 years before the events we saw in Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will show us how the House of Targaryen got involved in the civil war — Dance of the Dragons, which ultimately leads to the end of Westeros’ ruling family. In other words, before Daenerys Targaryen destroyed the capital city of King’s Landing, what was it like?
Let’s be honest, the weight of expectations from a TV series has never been heavier.
How to watch House of the Dragon in Germany
Technically, you can access a bunch of different streaming services and thousands of movies and shows with the help of a streaming-optimized VPN service. But since we’re talking about House of the Dragon, let’s focus on HBO Max, the streaming service that is bringing us this masterpiece.
Download the VPN and connect to a US server.
Log in to your streaming platform.
Find Game of Thrones and stream it no matter where you are.
Why is HBO Max not available in Germany?
Short answer: geo-restriction or geo-blocking.
Long answer: Many streaming services restrict their content from being accessed by people in countries other than the US, which means that there’s a whole world of entertainment that opens up when you start using a reliable, high-speed VPN service.
But is a VPN only for streaming?
Not at all. A reliable VPN (like the ones we recommend below) can come in handy in many other ways. Say, you’re buying air tickets for an upcoming trip. Browse the travel website after connecting to a server in a different country using a VPN service: you’ll get different rates! Bargain hunters save up to hundreds of dollars on a single trip using this method.
Or, say, you’re traveling abroad. If you connect to public Wifi networks (hotels, cafes, airports) with a strong VPN service, you’ll have the peace of mind that your personal data (banking info, emails, pictures, etc.) on your device are secure.

What happened at House of the Dragon premiere in London?
The cast members of House of the Dragon took turns around the Iron Throne during the show’s London premiere.
“It’s like a weird mix of feelings,” Emily Carey, who plays the young version of Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), said. “There is so much joy and pride in watching something beautiful come out.”
But she added that she was sad. “It’s so sad that it’s over and it’s releasing, and we’re not shooting anymore.”
House of the Dragon review: Extravagance does not alleviate problematic world of Westeros
Episode 1: The Heirs of the Dragon
The first episode of House of the Dragon is everything a Game of Thrones fan would wish for; violent, bloody, manipulation, sex, and beyond. With the very first seconds of the season under the high-walled castle of Westeros — we are heavily handed the message that women are an oppressed underclass that the corrupted men did not want to rule. The show focuses intensely on a serious family conflict involving dragons this time. The first episode effectively portrays each character’s problems and objectives, laying the groundwork for the ensuing bloodbath. The Heirs of the Dragon focuses squarely on succession.
Episode 2: The Rogue Prince
The Rogue Prince has a lot going on between the characters, with less action and more stage-setting, which is entirely understandable. The CGI background and dragons are some of the best we’ve ever seen. The long staircase to Dragonstone emerging out of the fog is majestic and artistically attractive, but it was breathtaking when Caraxes crawled onto the screen. He is a wonderful digital artwork, and with each viewing, he looks to become more alive and fluid. Daemon Targaryen went all out in this episode, faking a marriage, a pregnancy, stealing a full dragon egg, and nearly starting a political war simply to be the focus of attention.
Episode 3: Second of His Name
Second of His Name shows that House of the Dragon is slowly yet breathing takingly pacing up the game. There’s a three year time jump after the events of The Rogue Prince, King Visery’s is having a celebration in honor of his son Prince Aegon’s second birthday. Princess Rhaenyra seems to be sulking in the entirety of the episode as King Visery wants to marry her off with a suitable lord and despite being a heir to Iron Throne, she feels an outcast.
Episode three gave an outlook on King Viserys incompetency. He was given a flawless kingdom by Jaehaerys I, possibly the finest monarch who ever held the throne. However, it is quite obvious that the only reason he was selected over his cousin Rhaenys – despite her superior claim – was because he is a man. Viserys is a kind man, yet he is an incompetent King. He often overlooks things he does not want to deal with, such as the Crabfeeder gaining influence in the Stepstones and harming the Velaryon ships, or people openly designating Aegon heir despite his personal desire for Rhaenyra to succeed after him.
Episode 4: King of the Narrow Sea
Episode four of House of the Dragon gets a lot more exotic, with a slew of hips wiggling here and there. Those who started watching this drama expecting Game of Thrones-level vulgarity and unabashed nudity will not be disappointed. Other than that, King of the Narrow Sea is designed to show how women are only pawns in the hands of influential and powerful men in command.
The newest episode sets the stage for a narrative about marriage. Rhaenyra opens the episode with a Westeros-i version of Bachelorette, in which prospective suitors are paraded in front of her. She rejects all of them.
Daemon takes Rhaenyra on a tour of the real King’s Landing, a jumbled carnival that Rhaenyra enjoys until her uncle takes her to a stage show that isn’t much of a play as it is an incredibly on-the-nose progress report on where the succession stands between the named heir Rhaenyra, her baby brother Aegon, and even Daemon. He was fortifying her character by exposing her to the realities and possibilities of the actual world over which she was expected to reign. During their late night outing, Daemon does not so much entice Rhaenyra but he instills a message in her: Take what you want and with whom you want.
Episode 5: We Light the Way
We Light the Way is completely insane, with significant incidents altering the story’s path. The episode was gruesome and identical to the legendary Red Wedding from its precursor series, Game Of Thrones.
Game of Thrones was chastised by reviewers and fans alike for its lack of representation throughout its eight-season run. Characters of the race were few and frequently regarded through a regressive colonialist perspective; they handled brutality toward women with gory recklessness, and the show’s few LGBTQ+ characters were treated with particular malice. House of the Dragons shows that HBO has learned from its predecessors.
This week’s episode was very dreary. So many yearning or accusatory expressions. In the fantastic game, there are so many chess pieces being moved. And while the last feast was intended to be a magnificent flurry of tension before exploding into violence, it just felt amateurish to me. The editing choices felt more like a mockery of trial protocol than anything else. Even though many significant story moments occurred, it seemed like a throwaway.
What do we know about the cast of House of the Dragon?
Emma D’arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen
The king’s first child. She is a dragon rider of whole Valyrian blood. Many people believe Rhaenyra was born with everything…However, that is not the case.
Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen
Daemon, King Viserys’ younger brother and unrivaled warrior and dragonrider carries dragon blood. However, it is rumored that every time a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin into the air.
Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen
At the Great Council of Harrenhal, the lords of Westeros elected Viserys to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen. Viserys is a kind, compassionate, and moral guy who merely wants to continue on his grandfather’s heritage, but as we’ve seen on Game of Thrones, nice men don’t often make great kings.
Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower
Ser Otto, the Monarch’s Hand, serves both his king and his country loyally and dutifully. The Hand perceives the king’s brother, Daemon, and his position as successor to the throne as the greatest threat to the country.
Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower
She is the most beautiful lady in the Seven Kingdoms and the daughter of Otto Hightower, the King’s Hand. She grew up in the Red Keep, close to the king and his inner circle, and she possesses both courtly charm and strong political intelligence.
Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, “The Sea Snake”
He is the Lord of House Velaryon, a Valyrian pedigree dating back as far as House Targaryen. Lord Corlys, the most famous naval adventurer in Westeros history, turned his family into a strong seat that is even wealthier than the Lannisters and boasts the world’s greatest navy.
Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen
“The Queen Who Never Was,” a dragon rider and the wife of Lord Corlys Velaryon, was passed over as successor to the throne in the Great Council because the realm preferred her cousin, Viserys, merely because he was male.
Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole
Ser Criston, of Dornish origin, is the common-born son of the Lord of Blackhaven’s steward. He has no property or titles to his name; all he has is his honor and his supernatural talent with a sword.
Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria
She arrived in Westeros with nothing, but she ascended to become the most loyal – and most improbable – ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne.

“Can’t wait to see Vhagar, she is considered as the oldest dragon during the Dance. She is one of the 3 dragons that helped conquer Westeroes during Aegons Conquest.” – Razz

Was the Game of Thrones prequel canceled before?
House of the Dragon has nothing to do with the other Game of Thrones prequel HBO spent over $30 million on before canceling it. And that was just the cost of the pilot episode.
Unlike House of the Dragon, which was picked up on the spot, that canceled prequel was set thousands of years ago, in the mysterious era when Westeros’ Age of Heroes plummeted into the first Long Night and was known unofficially as Bloodmoon.
The day Bloodmoon was cancelled House of Dragon was announced.

If Rings of Power had broadcast one episode each week, both shows’ season 1 finales would have aired the same week. Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV series will now end on October 14, more than a week before House of the Dragon.

Why ExpressVPN is the best VPN for HBO Max
ExpressVPN is always on top when it comes to a fast, optimized network of servers that work with streaming services like HBO Max, HBO Now, and HBO Go. They guarantee delivery of HBO Max content in high video quality without compromising security, privacy or leaving any traces of your online activity.
In our testing, ExpressVPN performed spectacularly. We mainly focused on their ability to unblock HBO Max and to our surprise they have surpassed all other VPN providers when it comes to speed, which is a big plus. Our base speed, which was 100Mbps, was downgraded by only 2 to 3%. A reduction to 98 Mbps is not a big deal considering other VPNs downgrade speed by up to 50%
How ExpressVPN unblocks HBO Max?
HBO Max, after witnessing the surge in their subscribers, started a crackdown on VPN and proxy IPs, making it difficult to bypass HBO Max’s geo-restricted content for a long time. However, ExpressVPN transports traffic for HBO Max separately through white-listed residential IPs from credible vendors, making it impossible for HBO Max to trace your real or VPN IP.
Why is ExpressVPN the fastest VPN for HBO Max?
ExpressVPN spent heavily on their infrastructure. This is the reason they charge a premium. They don't compromise on quality, especially when it comes to speed. In our examination, we came to know that ExpressVPN fuels more than 800 Mbps on different nodes of residential IPs, turbo-charging their network. On top of that, their world-class infrastructure and quality apps make it very easy to connect to HBO Max in just a couple of clicks and without any disruption or detection by HBO Max.
Servers in the US: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Lincoln Park, Los Angeles, Miami, New Jersey, New York, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Santa Monica, Seattle, Tampa, Washington DC.

- Seamless streaming on HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime Video and all other US platforms
- Top-notch security and privacy, making you untraceable online
- Premium and expensive compared to other VPNs
- Browser extension performed slightly worse than others
We also noticed that ExpressVPN’s smart DNS feature lets you untap exotic locations to stream content, which is otherwise impossible. Then there is the whole world of torrenting that opens up, that too without leaving a trace. This is great for those who love binging on shows.
PureVPN guarantees you the best browsing and streaming experience for HBO Max and other similar on-demand channels across the globe. Over the years, due to the popularity of HBO Max across the globe, this VPN has improvised itself quite significantly, and invested heavily into its infrastructure, particularly for HBO Max, to provide their user base a smooth streaming experience.
How's the performance of PureVPN apps in terms of speed?
PureVPN offers a wide range of apps for almost all devices, however, one of the important factors for any streamer is the speed at which they can browse their favorite content. PureVPN spends heavily on Netflix when it comes to speed, however, for HBO Max, we have experienced a downgrade of base speed by up to 15%. During our test, our speed was 100 Mbps. However, after successfully unblocking HBO Max through their browser extension, we faced a drop in our speed and it reduced to 85 Mbps. Considering their subscription price, which is quite low, an average streaming user may settle on it. Even if you face a disconnection, you can just reconnect again to continue browsing HBO Max seamlessly.
Since HBO Max is a US-based streaming platform, it's important to check how many diversified locations servers PureVPN has in the USA. During our test, we found that they have servers in Miami, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Jersey, New York, Houston, Atlanta, Washington DC, Ashburn, San Francisco, Seattle, and Salt Lake City.
- Most competitive price than any other VPN in the market (best value)
- Other than HBO Max, they unblock thousands of channels across entertainment, sports, news categories, making them a strong contender
- Recently they improved their speed for HBO Max
- 24/7 infrastructure and system to provide uninterrupted support to unblock HBO Max without letting users face downtime
- 6,500+ servers in 78 countries and 96 locations
- After connecting to Hulu, they reduced our 100 Mbps speed to 85 Mbps
- Not all apps work smoothly for HBO Max just like their browser extension
