Oscar Wilde once said that “art imitates life much more than life imitates art.” And although that may have been the case in 1889, the actual crime genre has seen explosive growth since then. On the other hand, the flood of related podcasts and, much more so, Netflix docuseries will give you nightmares. A dramatized, based-on-true-events movie may provide some emotional space to a straightforward narrative, which is helpful if you want some documentary distance while still pursuing the natural fascination that comes from knowing a horrific incident occurred.

Even though Paramount Plus is one of the newest entrants in the streaming industry, its roster is already producing many fascinating streaming original and acquired series. Additionally, many movies are available and worthy of investigation. The film selection at Paramount Plus is fantastic, and it spans the gamut from the ages past to the present day and the decades between then and now.

The horror genre is not suited to “Master,” directed by Mariama Diallo. It is not even remotely scary. Its story and lore are confusing and underdeveloped. The real-life microaggressions that it throws at its characters are so familiar to viewers of color that they are nowhere near as shocking nor surprising as the film thinks they are. Despite these flaws, it is still marketed as a horror movie.

All of the African-American characters in the film are shown as helpless victims, entirely free of any emotion other than terror. They interact in ways that we would never do in environments dominated by white people. When watching a movie like this, I can’t help but incorporate my own experiences into it, particularly when the characters are going through something that I have also gone through at some point in my life. And while though I don’t expect a movie, particularly a horror movie, to be completely realistic, I can tell that this one is trying to play both sides of the actual fence. So, I must play along.

They take him in as well, and both of them are thrown into the county prison while the authorities investigate their alibi claims.
