Young Sheldon has a similar feel and tone to The Big Bang Theory, so if that program is a favourite in your household, you might want to try it. As much as I enjoyed it from the start, I must admit that the program has grown on me as the shorter episodes (most are under 30 minutes) have given more time to character and relationship-building.
After watching the pilot, one critic critiqued the show’s lack of character growth. I agree that a compelling actor plays the young Sheldon. Like the adult Sheldon, the young Sheldon is sincere, wants to do good, and is confident in his judgment.
However, he recognizes his ignorance of social conventions. He is willing to take advice from those closest to him, with the caveat that he is not obligated to follow their advice. Because he is unique, the family dynamic and the complications that arise are always entertaining. Unlike the fictional Middle family from “Malcolm in the Middle,” this one feels more like a real-life household.
Sheldon is unexpectedly confident and unique, and the show benefits from those qualities. However, there are a lot of predictable jokes (not all of them horrible) and predictable plot twists.
