The BMF Documentary: Blowing Money Fast Review

Episode 1: Detroit Dreams

The Flenory family is trying to make ends meet in Detroit in the early 1980s, causing their sons Demetrius “Meech” and Terry to turn to drug peddling to aid. The money starts to trickle in, but with it comes their first major test in shape of Layton “The Beast” Simon.

There have been other documentaries and tellings of this exact story but this documentary is unique. One of the key reasons is that you get to hear from Meech, which helps viewers comprehend that the show is based on true events. The narrative is redeeming in some ways; MF illustrates how these men constructed the empire and their influence on the cities in which they lived, notably Atlanta, without glorifying the nature of their enterprise, which is predicated on addiction and is blatantly harmful.

Episode 2: Gangster Boogie

The feud between the Flenory brothers and Layton heats up to a deadly new extreme. Meanwhile, the Detroit drug scene is evolving as a result of gang warfare, opening up new avenues for fame and money for those who survive. Meech and Terry determines whether staying is worth jeopardizing their lives.

The episode starts with an intense moments of shoot out – bullets grazing and screaming – and focuses on the Lamar (Layton ‘Beast’ Simon). Gangster Boogie shows that, unfortunately, the industry in which Meech was involved in, is fraught with violence. You can’t simply sit back and earn your money while reaping the benefits of being absolutely flat in the area with drugs and knowing that someone is going to come for you. Someone will put you to the test since your place at the top is always at stake. You could never become comfortable in the industry; it’s just not something that the “streets” will allow you to accomplish.
